Abaya sizes are given in inches, measured from the shoulder to the hem — a 54 is 54 inches long. Choose by your height rather than your dress size: most people are a 52 up to 5'2", a 54 to 5'5", a 56 to 5'8" and a 58 above that. If you are between two, the longer one usually hangs better.

Nida is a soft, matte fabric with a little weight to it — it holds its shape and does not cling, which is why most everyday abayas are made from it. Crepe has a finer texture and hangs straighter, so it suits open-front and layered pieces. Both wash well and neither needs ironing if you hang it while damp.

Cool machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle, inside out, with similar colours. Do not tumble dry — hang it damp and it will drop out on its own. Embellished pieces are best hand washed or put in a mesh bag.
